10+ Ways to Add Bible to Your Homeschool (And Stay Consistent With It!)

Having time to do daily Bible devotions is easily one of the best things that has come out of our choice to homeschool.

When my oldest was in public school, it seemed like there wasn’t time to do anything!

Our days were a constant parade of trying to get to school on time, pick up on time, get homework done, and get to bed on time.

I tried really hard to remember to pray with my daughter in the car before dropping her off at school…but I often forgot.

Even if I had the energy and drive to be consistent with doing devotions with my child, I doubt there would have been a time during the day that she would have been receptive.

Mornings were so rushed, and by the evening she was fried from a long school day and homework.

Pulling out another book would have seemed like “extra work” and not have gone over well.

Enter Homeschooling!

Once we started homeschooling, I found I suddenly had so much more time to spend reading the Bible, talking about spiritual things with my kids, praying with them, and connecting with them.

It was awesome!

Of course, it helped a lot that I had a box curriculum that included a fantastic Bible curriculum that was woven through everything we did.

I have since moved away from box curriculums, so how do I keep the devotional/Biblical momentum going in our homeschool?

It became very easy every morning to feel pressed for time if we had co-op, an appointment, a playdate, errands to run, or we got a late start to the day.

I would sometimes have my kids start out on core subjects of math, reading, etc. and I would intend to pick up their enrichment subjects (including Bible) in the afternoon.

Bad idea.

I knew it was a bad example to my kids to show them that Bible comes AFTER core subjects…if we have time – what was a I thinking?!

How I Got Consistent Again with Bible and Prayer in Our Homeschool

Several months ago, we started “Morning Time” in our homeschool and that has been a game changer!

You can read more about our Morning Time routine (also called Morning Basket by some), but it is essentially how we kick off our homeschool day now.

We all pile on the couch and I read a devotional to my kids, we talk about it, and we pray.

I am held accountable by my kids because they expect Morning Time and start asking questions (that I don’t want to answer) if I feel we are too rushed and need to skip it.

If you also struggle with being consistent with doing devotions in your homeschool – morning time is the key!

Tell your kids that you are starting the day out together with God’s Word (as well as any other subjects you want to do together), and it takes the guesswork out of the morning routine.

Morning Time adds structure, accountability, and a feeling of togetherness that is the perfect way to get in your homeschool groove for the day.

It is a fantastic resource to give kids the confidence to read the Bible and understand it for themselves.

We just bought another Jesus Storybook Bible for my middle daughter because our old one (which was 6 years old) had finally fallen apart.

We love the bright, detailed pictures, and that every story ends with a tie to Jesus.

There is much discussion of the “Great Rescue Plan” that is playing out – a really neat way to explain salvation to younger ones!

They have ones for girls, boys, little ones, bedtime, morning time – you can definitely find something to fit your homeschool!

What I love about these is that they are short, sweet, and offer application of God’s Word in a kid’s life.

Kids may understand a lot of Bible stories, but they may not understand how that applies to how they should act.

Short, targeted devotionals for kids that apply to adults as well! One devotional per day with a Bible verse and quote to think about as well.

8. Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids

I have Jesus Calling for adults and I think that this kids version is a great idea!

Definitely a fresh take on devotions and an interesting way to bring scripture to life for kids.

Devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child’s heart.

Based on her original Jesus Calling, this version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives.

Answers Bible Curriculum for Kids is one of the main books I have lined up for our next year.

It is definitely a much more in depth curriculum – as opposed to a devotional.

Check with your church and see if they have a Right Now Media account.

Right Now Media is like Netflix for Bible studies. 

You can stream an incredible amount of amazing content for kids and adults!

The kids programs are fantastic and would be a great option for any age to do video bible study in your homeschool.

The only catch is that you have to get access through your church – there are no options for individual accounts.

On the bright side, if your church has an account – it will be free for your family to use this awesome resource!

UPDATE:

We have already started reading the above book from the Hidden Heroes series for Bible this year. 

We have been doing the same style of devotional for so long, that I really wanted to make a change – give my kids something unexpected.

So, we are focusing on missionaries and the amazing stories they have reported over the years of God working!

It has been so fun to read to my kids about the Gospel being spread to people – one person at a time – since the time of the disciples. 

Fantastic read to get kids excited about their faith and remind them about the Big God who still works today!

This is one of the resources we used last year and I really enjoyed it. It was a short read of scripture + a devotional reading to go along with it. 

Then there were three or four discussion quesions (my favorite!) to go over with the kids.

I also liked to fit in snippets of The Chosen along with this too. My kids really enjoyed seeing the scenes come to life!

Highly recommend this for a meaty, deep dive into the New Testament.

Adding Bible to Your Homeschool Recap

 

As I said, it is an incredible privilege to be able to homeschool my kids and teach them God’s Word every day as part of their school work.

As you review the above list, I would highly recommend picking out more than one resource. I have found that my kids grow bored of seeing the same book every morning.

Most devotional books have 365 lessons…but kids can grow tired of a book long before they get to the last devotional.

I have had the best success with using a variety of books – they don’t know which one I’m going to grab!
