The first thing to do with kids who are new to single digit addition is to make it as concrete as possible.

This worksheet features cute pictures of sports balls, but you may consider grabbing some blocks or other manipulatives to place over each image.

At this early age, some children really need to be able to pick up and hold something to understand it.

Either way, have the student count each group of objects and write the number.

If they have not started memorizing their facts, you can ask the child to count the blocks “all together” or use a number line.

You could also use this time to start with simple word problems. For example, you could say ,”Jim had 3 soccer balls and Tim brought one more. How many are there altogether?”

Never too early to start applying math skills!

This second worksheet gives addition practice with horizontal format number sentence problems.

Your student may fly through this if it is just extra math practice. But if they need a little more help, here is a great way to make it fun!

Slide the worksheet into a sheet protector, and give your student some playdough.

Tell the student you are going to use the playdough to solve the first problem: 1+2.

Instruct them to put one piece of playdough (just have them tear off a small piece or make a small ball of playdough) on the 1. Then have them play 2 pieces on the number 2.

Have the student slide all the pieces into the square and count the total amount. That’s the answer!

This may take a long time (and you can stop when you think the student has had enough), but it could help tremendously for the child to better understand and internalize the concept.

This printable may be the first time your child has seen column addition or vertical addition.

Explain to your student that not much has changed! The numbers are just stacked on top of each other and the line at the bottom is the “equal sign.”

If needed, you can even write one or two problems out horizontally to show that they are the same.

I know that is not the preferred method, but it could be a faster method than using blocks for some kids.

This sheet has the most problems and can serve as a good weekly or monthly review sheet to keep skills sharp.

Have the child solve each of the problems and write the answer inside the star shape.

Provide an answer key for the child to quickly check themselves. If they make an error, have them use manipulatives to find the correct answer.

When they are done, tell the child that they are a math superstar for completing it!

If your student knows the answer but struggles with writing numbers, consider brushing up on those skills with these Number Writing Practice Worksheets.

This is the last worksheet and by far the most challenging. It might even require a little mental math work.

Tell your student that they must be a detective again and find the missing part of the math problem.

If they know their facts solidly and understand number bonds, this will be a great exercise for them to complete.

If not, go through it with your student and have the child give their best answer.

Provide manipulatives for the student to check their answer.
