This first axolotl coloring page drawing is a great choice for all animal lovers!

As your child is coloring, ask them if they know what those feathery appendages on either side of the animal’s head is for.

Did they know that they actually serve as gills?

Yes! Those feathery things help this animal breathe underwater!

As your child is pulling out a box of crayons to get after these axolotl coloring sheets, ask the student what color axolotls are supposed to be.

I would have thought they were pink because that is usually what I have seen in pictures, but I have recently found out that these adorable axolotls come in a variety of colors and patterns!

Encourage your child to use any and all colors to make these little creatures look realistic.

You might notice that this axolotl only has 4 gills showing.

Did you know that these fascinating creatures can survive without their gills? Many of them have their gills eaten by other fish (when in an aquarium setting), and they often regenerate.

While the creature waits for them to grow back, the axolotl can also use their semi-permeable skin and lungs to breathe!

This little guy looks like he has a full stomach. Well, what do axolotls eat anyway?

Turns out that these cuties are actually carnivores. They like to munch on small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, worms, etc.

We have already learned that axolotls can be many different colors, but did your kid know that axolotls can shift their color to be darker or lighter to camouflage?

That is really its only defense mechanism because in its natural habitatmthe axolotl is an apex predator.

Do you know where their natural habitat is? Fresh water areas around Mexico City.

We have already learned that this animal can regrew its gills, but the axolotl has other powers too!

It can also regrow its limbs, tail, brain, and its heart!

An axolotl can even repair their spinal cord back to perfect condition after an injury.

Okay, so this may not look like a realistic axolotl, but it will be such a fun activity for your kid!

Who wouldn’t want a guitar (or ukulele) playing axolotl to color??

What music do you think an axolotl would want to play?

Is this axolotl underwater or on land?

Let your kid decide!

In real life, axolotls *can* survive out of water for brief periods of time, but they prefer to be in the water.

I just love this last picture!

So silly, but such a a cute picture of an axolotl eating an ice cream cone.
